There Are No Words...

DH and I did the unimaginable today and had our sweet little girl, Brie, put to sleep :o( Even as I write this, I still expect to see her on her bed, looking up at me with those big beautiful brown eyes.

For those of you who are new to my Blog, Brie was our four and a half year old Miniature Dachshund. In July of 2008, her vertebrae collapsed onto her spinal cord and rendered her partially paralysed. Without much thought, DH and I took her over to PEI and had her back operated on.

Over the past year, we had seen her take great strides. With her excellent attitude and strong will, she walked and even began going up and down stairs again! Unfortunately as that got better, her incontinence got worse :o(

Why do some people and/or animals come into our life for such short period of times compared to others? When we brought Brie home, DH and I expected that she would be part of our life for at least a dozen years or more. She filled our hearts with love and planted a smile on anyone's face that met her for the first time. There was never a mean bone in her body.

There really are no words. We'll mourn in silence and feel comforted knowing that Pickles and Buddy were there waiting to greet Brie into her next life.

  25. I am soooo sorry, such a heart wrenching post. I too, have had to put a "best friend" to sleep. It is one of the hardest things I have experienced. One of my friends had a dog like Brie and it had a similar thing happen to it with the spine thing. They too, lost their sweet baby to this also. Pets are definitely family, unconditional loving little cuddle bugs that help see you through our ups and downs in life. So sorry to hear such sad news, take care.

I'm so so sorry for this terrible loss. I know how it feels sweetie, and it does feel terrible...
Brie had the chance to have the most wonderful mum and dad, and she has been incredibly loved.
No words can help you through this pain, indeed. I'm sharing yours, with tears in my eyes and a terrible sense of uselessness.
A million comforting hugs to you.

  27. I am deeply sorry about your loss of Brie. We went through a similar situation with our dog of
13 years (I automatically looked around for her for days). Pets become a family member. It is hard but you will get through it.
    Wishing you happy days ahead....

  28. There are no words to ease your pain, I know. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Your question of why are some people and animals only in our lives for such a short time; I have two thoughts on that. I hope in some small way those thoughts can help you heal.

It is my belief that we are touched by an animal's love or person presence because that is what we need from them in our life to deal with a difficult time or to share our joy. They are here to serve a greater need in ourselves we weren't aware.

I also like to think, those that are only in our lives a brief moment is because they are too good for this world.

My heart hurts for you in a way that these words can't convey.

    Sending you hugs and comfort.

Sweet kisses for Brie as she makes her way across the Rainbow Bridge.

  29. Hi, My name is Suzanne and I have been reading your blog for a while and I just had to comment today. You see on the 14th August we also had to make that hard awful decision, with our 12 year old Cocker Spaniel, Lulu. I know the pain you are going through, it is truly unbearable and you feel as if it will never go away. But they tell me it gets better with time!
The house just seems so quiet and empty.
Even though I don't know you, my heart goes out to you.
    Regards,
    Suzanne,

  30. I am so very sorry that Brie is gone. I rooted for her during her surgery and recovery and was pleased she was doing so well. I had to say goodbye to my Pomeranian not quite a month and a half ago, so I know how much it hurts. I'm so sorry.

  40. I so know what you are feeling. We had to have our sweet Jackie put to sleep on July 13, she was no longer able to walk or control herself...it has been just terrible for our daughter who has had her by her side for 12 years and does not remember a time without her. We are still suffering. We are getting a new puppy next weekend but I am unsure whether we have made a right choice but I can not bear seeing my daughter grieve for her best friend. Blessings, Dianntha
